In collaboration with the Czech-Japanese Society (ČJS), the DOX Center for Contemporary Art is organizing a workshop on Japanese calligraphy—shodo—for visitors to the GA-I-SU-RA exhibition. Shodo is the traditional art of brush writing, which combines language, movement, and personal expression.
The workshop loosely follows in the footsteps of Petr Geisler, a Japanologist, journalist, and calligrapher, whose life and work form one of the contexts of the exhibition. Participants will learn the basic principles of Japanese writing and calligraphy, try their hand at working with a brush and ink, and create their own character or short inscription inspired by the exhibition’s themes—identity, memory, and the relationship between cultures.
The emphasis will be placed not only on technique but also on the experience of writing itself, which in Japanese tradition is perceived as a form of concentration and self-expression.
The workshop is open to the general public; no prior experience is necessary.
